BAST EDGES ATENEO IN THE 7TH ATENEO FOOTBALL CUP

February 9, 2026Benthel AsiaArticlesNo Comments

Benthel Asia School of Technology Inc.’s U-17 (Secondary Division) rallied to secure a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the 7th Ateneo Football Cup on Sunday at Fr. Hernando Athletics Field, Ateneo de Cebu.

A closely fought match between BAST and Ateneo delivered on intensity as both sides failed to break the deadlock during the two 25-minute periods. With neither team able to find the back of the net, the referees and committee called for a 10-minute extension 5 minutes per half in attempt to avoid penalties -final chance for either side to secure the win outright.

And it was during those brief instances that the game discovered its heroes.

Only three minutes prior to the final whistle, BAST launched a quick counterattack. Then a crucial foul by Ateneo provided BAST an excellent chance. Midfielder Chad Tuazon approached the free kick and sent a threatening ball into the penalty area.

The goal keeper of Ateneo initially reached out to it but was unable to secure the catch causing the ball to feel loose. However, midfielder Vir Hansirk Subrado acted swiftly guiding the rebound into the net for what turned out to be the decisive goal.

Ateneo frantically sought an equalizer in the final minutes but failed to break through BAST steadfast defense. When the final whistle sounded, BAST players and fans burst into celebration, while Ateneo lamented their missed chances.

Although the game had few goals for the majority of its time, it ended dramatically and memorably, with BAST emerging as victors — just escaping a tense penalty shootout.
