Guidelines for Implementing Heterogeneous groupings of Students

As this institution is developing for the betterment of the students, the management has decided to adapt its class groupings from homogeneous to heterogeneous particularly in elementary department. In order to develop a friendly environment among the students and to develop students’ self-esteem for they will be classified as equal group of students in a class per level.

Furthermore, this new program will be implemented to enhance students’ multiple intelligences as presented by Dr. Howard Gardner in his research at Harvard University: Linguistic, Mathematical-Logical, Spatial, Musical, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal through collaboration of different activities that is participated by heterogeneous group of students.

In connection with this, guidelines are presented to serve as bases for the teachers, the parents and the management in providing learning to the students and in categorizing students for Academic awards.

  1. Complex instructions. It involves more on the student – centered activities as they will be grouped and each member will be given a specific task in order to engage all students in the learning process. The teacher must prepare well-structured learning activities that have the following characteristics: challenging, open-ended, multi-ability based and requiring inter-dependent work.
  2. Alternative Assessment. This assessment has two categories which will be done by the teacher to test written works and performance task.

  • Traditional Assessment is given to the students daily, weekly or monthly to test their learning for every lesson taken up by the teacher in the class in each subject. This assessment can be done through a seatwork, quiz and periodical exams.
  • Instructional Rubrics (Ms. Heidi Goodrich Andrade of Harvard University). This makes the students’ assessment quick and efficient, and provides a clear method of reporting the students’ progress in performing each given task both individually or in a group.
  1. Academic Awards:

Every quarter each level will group students who will qualify for the awards per category as stated in the students’ handbook. The awardees will be categorized by grade level not by section.

  • Other educational concerns for a technologically competitive Benthelian Learner.
